I really hope the gaming industry takes the right side and let's players carry over their purchases to new consoles going forward. At least with physical copies you can still plug in your old console and play it. The problem of buying a game digitally is in most instances, you can't move that purchase over when you upgrade to a new console. This is starting to become a much bigger issue in the gaming world as digital had taken over physical sales. Of course best way to find out would be to just redeem it on one switch then try to redeem it again on the other.
Any account on the switch you redeem it on will be able to play it, but your girlfriend will have to buy it again to play it on her switch. I'm not super familiar with how accounts work on the switch because I'm the only one that uses mine and I haven't bought the switch collection so I might be wrong, but more than likely it's a one-use code. If so, beyond the limited possibility of sharing a cartridge, this also brings up the question: if someone buys a used copy of the physical game, they would have no way of knowing beforehand if they'll find the code inside redeemed or not.Īnd thus we come to one of the biggest issues with downloading games: you don't really own it, you're just paying for a licence. I haven't tried yet but does LIS's eShop code mean that only one account will even be able to redeem it? Both my girlfriend and I have a Switch and we play each other's cartridges (that's the main reason we still buy cartridges instead of digital copies).
This makes me wonder what happens after you redeem the code. It's not the first time I see a game with half of its content needing a download code, Assassins Creed Rebel Collection or Bioshock Collection being other examples, but if I remember right, for these games I didn't have to go to the eShop to redeem a code found in the box, Either the download would start automatically as an "update", or I would get an in-game screen allowing me to download the content. You have to go to the Nintendo eShop and redeem the code to get the download started. I was surprised to see that the Arcadia Bay Collection comes with am eShop code for Life is Strange: Before the Storm.
